Released 11/02/2026
The public consultation period is now open on the Development Application (DA) for Canberra’s new state-of-the-art recycling facility in Hume.
This follows the approval of the final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the facility’s construction and operation. The EIS approval confirms that the project meets rigorous social and environmental standards, paving the way for a sustainable, future-focused recycling solution for Canberra.
The New Recycling Facility project will deliver a world-class operation capable of sorting paper and cardboard, glass, plastic, steel and aluminium. It is designed to achieve some of the highest resource recovery and material purity standards in the industry.
The new, larger facility will process up to 115,000 tonnes of mixed recyclables each year – an increase of 50,000 tonnes compared to the previous recycling facility. This expanded capacity will support commercial recycling, service Local NSW Councils, and accommodate Canberra’s population growth over the next 20 years.
Advanced sorting technology will be used throughout the facility, including automated sensors and screens to separate paper, laser optical identification with air jets to sort plastics and powerful magnets to extract metals.
Subject to DA approval, construction is expected to begin in 2026, and the facility is scheduled to be operational by 2028.
In the meantime, no changes are planned to recycling services in the ACT. The current contractor, Re.Group, will continue to manage interim recycling services for the ACT until the new facility is complete.
The community can lodge submissions with the Territory Planning Authority until 10 March 2026 via the Authority’s website - Development Application no. 202644904 - City and Environment Directorate - Planning
The new recycling facility is jointly funded by the Australian Government through the Recycling Modernisation Fund.
