Update on City Health Building at 1 Moore Street

Released 17/08/2026

Remediation works at 1 Moore Street continue to progress and options for reopening are being actively explored.

While this work is underway, it remains too early to confirm a revised reopening date.

Infrastructure Canberra continues to work closely with specialist advisers, remediation experts and contractors following the identification of asbestos-containing material (ACM) within non-occupied areas of the City Health Building at 1 Moore Street.

Since the building's closure in late June 2026, ongoing testing has not identified any ACM within occupied areas of the building under normal operating conditions, but the extent of ACM detected in non-occupied areas has reinforced the need for a comprehensive remediation program across the building.

A specialist asbestos remediation contractor is now undertaking activities within the building. The remediation program includes the removal of identified ACM where required, detailed cleaning, validation and clearance testing and independent verification activities.

At the same time, Infrastructure Canberra is continuing to assess options to support the future reoccupation of 1 Moore Street, including remediation and building works that address the source of the current issue and support the building's long-term operation.

Any decision regarding reoccupation will be informed by the completion of remediation activities, testing and independent expert verification.

The health and safety of building occupants, tenants, contractors and visitors remains the ACT Government's highest priority. All decisions regarding access to, and reoccupation of, the building will continue to be guided by specialist expert advice and independent certification.

Infrastructure Canberra will continue to work closely with partner Directorates to support tenant agencies and service providers in implementing business continuity arrangements and minimising disruption to services while the building remains closed.

Further updates on remediation progress, future works and potential reopening milestones will be provided as more information becomes available.
