Legal Aid ACT to provide Tenants Advice Service from 1 April 2020

Released 18/12/2019

Legal Aid ACT has been selected as the preferred tenderer in a select process conducted by the Justice and Community Safety Directorate for the provision of the Tenants’ Advice Service (TAS).

The new TAS will be launched on 1 April 2020, ensuring that there is no gap in service delivery for tenants and occupants in the ACT.

The Justice and Community Safety Directorate looks forward to working with Legal Aid ACT to maximise the services available to renters and occupants in the ACT.

Contract negotiations between the Justice and Community Safety Directorate and Legal Aid ACT will commence in January 2020 and will include discussions about any offers of employment that Legal Aid ACT may be able to make to the staff who are currently providing the TAS.

Legal Aid ACT has been helping the ACT community for over 40 years. Throughout this time, they have remained dedicated in their focus to provide quality legal assistance services to the community across a diverse range of areas.

Legal Aid ACT provided strong evidence of their capacity to deliver the TAS through its existing infrastructure and well-developed service model for similar specialist legal services, such as the Older Persons ACT Legal Service (‘OPALS’) and the general advice Helpline.

Legal Aid ACT proposes to extend the opening hours of the Tenants Advice Service and will offer complimentary services such as live chat.

The tender process was conducted to ensure that the TAS provides the best value for money and quality of service for the Canberra community to ensure maximum service accessibility to tenants and occupants in the ACT.

This announcement has been made in accordance with timeframes which were advised to all tenderers when the process began in November 2019. The decision which has been made was based on responses provided to the tender process.
