Released 23/11/2021

Christmas in the City 2021 opens today with a program of events and installations to kick off the festive season in Canberra’s CBD.

With a Christmas tree, art installation and decorations in City Walk, a packed program of performances ranging from the Canberra Symphony Orchestra to on-street DJs, and an advent calendar of festive offers from local businesses, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr said Christmas in the City is particularly important after a tough year.

“This has been a challenging time for everyone so with we really wanted to give Canberrans something to celebrate and a reason to get back to the city,” said the Chief Minister.

“As we move out of lockdown, Canberrans will be keen to support local businesses and this will be a key driver of our economic recovery into Christmas and throughout 2022.”

“This year we have the biggest Christmas program ever, with something for everybody. Christmas in the City will focus on encouraging Canberrans visit the city centre to support local, enjoy shopping, eating out and to catch up with friends and family.”

“This Christmas the design for the decorations and installations celebrates the beloved natural elements from our city, including our iconic Gang Gang cockatoo.”

The Christmas in the City 2021 program includes:

As restrictions ease, the city is being brought back to life with Christmas performances and entertainment that began in mid-November and will run through until Christmas Eve.

In a massive program celebrating all things Christmas, there will be everything from Dancing in the Streets to naughty elves descending upon Braddon. Even the Canberra Symphony Orchestra will perform under the Christmas tree in City Walk to spread the Christmas cheer.
