COVID-19 vaccine bookings open for 16-29 year old Canberrans

Released 01/09/2021 - Joint media release

Canberrans between the ages of 16 and 29 can now book in for a Pfizer COVID-19 vaccination at an ACT COVID-19 mass vaccination clinic.

“16-29 is an critical age group in our vaccination roll out. Our success in reaching vaccine targets over 80% by the end of the year hinges on getting as many Canberrans in this age group vaccinated as quickly as possible,” Chief Minister Andrew Barr said.

“Of the roughly 85,000 people in the 16-29 cohort, nearly 25,000 have already been vaccinated, and more than 30,000 have registered for MyDHR in anticipation of making a vaccination booking.

“We are continuing to be a national leader in this race, and this puts the ACT in the best position possible as the nation reopens later in the year.

ACT Health will contact everyone who has already registered through MyDHR via a text message to invite them to book online.

Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said the current outbreak in the ACT was an ongoing reminder of the importance of vaccination.

“Vaccination is the best thing you can do to protect yourself, your family and the whole community. People who are vaccinated are much less likely to suffer the most severe effects of COVID-19 and are less likely to be infected and infect others,” Minister Stephen-Smith said.

“I’m confident that we will see the same level of enthusiasm from 16 to 29-year-olds as we’ve seen from Canberra’s older age groups.

“The fastest and easiest way to book is online through the MyDHR portal, but if you need to book by phone the call back option will save waiting in the phone queue. We are expecting a large volume of phone calls and online traffic and ask people to be patient, kind and considerate if the booking process takes a little time.

“Vaccination appointments for 16-29 year olds may still be some time away, with the next booking at ACT Government clinics not available until late October. We will be rescheduling appointments to earlier dates if supply from the Commonwealth allows.

“The ACT Government continuing to work with the Commonwealth Government and healthcare providers to deliver a safe, effective and accessible COVID-19 vaccine program in the ACT.”
