A new primary school for Whitlam

Released 20/07/2022 - Joint media release

The ACT Government is committed to providing every family with access to a great local public school – including in our newest suburbs.

A new P-6 primary school in Whitlam will be delivered by the ACT Government over the coming years. This school will have a capacity for up to 800 primary school students and will also have an Early Childhood Education Centre with a 130-place capacity.

Molonglo’s third public school is scheduled to be open in time for the 2025 school year. Design and planning work on the new school is continuing.

Having access to a great local school is part of what makes our city a great place to live. As our city grows, the Government is making sure that we have great schools available for families.

We are undertaking the most ambitious school infrastructure program in the history of the ACT Government. We are building new and expanded schools in growing communities, and renewing the schools that Canberrans know and love right across the city.

Quotes attributable to Chief Minister, Andrew Barr:

Our school build program is an important part of the Government’s infrastructure program. There are nine major school infrastructure projects completed or under construction already in this term, with another five major school infrastructure builds already scheduled to start in the next four years. Further planning is also underway for additional school infrastructure projects.

Through the investments we are making in building new schools and renewing schools across the city, the Government is also creating more local jobs.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Education and Early Childhood Development, Yvette Berry:

The suburb of Whitlam is growing more and more every day, and it is great to be able to meet this growth with a new public primary school and Early Childhood Education Centre.

As we’ve seen when other new schools like Throsby and Evelyn Scott have opened in recent years, there is something special about when a school opens its doors to students and families for the first time. The residents of Whitlam will get to experience that special feeling in early 2025.

Meeting enrolment growth in greenfield suburbs is an important part of our infrastructure planning for the ACT public school networks. Our system continues to grow, and the ACT Government is investing to meet that growth.
