The ACT is a step closer to having our democratic rights restored.

Today in the Senate, at the second reading stage, Senators votes 41-25 in favour restoring Territory rights.

“I thank all the Senators who voted in favour of Territory rights and particularly acknowledge the work of our ACT Senators Katy Gallagher and David Pocock”, Chief Minister Andrew Barr said.

We now have a time frame for the third and final vote in the Senate next Thursday. Minister Cheyne and I hope to be in the Senate public gallery to witness what looks to be an historic moment for the ACT."

“For many years now, along with our ACT and NT federal colleagues, we have actively campaigned to resolve an injustice that for 25 years has seen Territory citizens denied their democratic rights on the basis of where they live,” added Minster for Human Rights, Tara Cheyne.

“On behalf of the ACT Government and our citizens, we welcome the resounding vote today, and acknowledge that we are now closer than ever before to winning the hard fought battle to restore our Territory Rights.”
