Canberra's dragon boat community to get new facility

Released 19/03/2022 - Joint media release

A new permanent home for dragon boating will begin construction this year.

“The Grevillea Park facility will provide our growing dragon boating community some new amenities, including more suitable boat storage, a training room, office and meeting rooms, a timekeeping room, changerooms and a marshalling area,” said Chief Minister Andrew Barr.

“The construction of the facility will also help create and protect local jobs and grow our employment base to over 250,000 local jobs by 2025.”

Once completed, the new facility will be sub-leased to Dragon Boat ACT, the governing body for the sport in the ACT, who will also contribute over $200,000 to the project. The ACT Government will invest $1.3 million into the construction project in the upcoming Budget Review.

“Dragon Boat ACT already conducts training sessions and regattas at Grevillea Park via a temporary facility that can no longer be located at that site, with this investment we will deliver a brand new facility that will meet the needs of participants well into the future,” said Yvette Berry, Minister for Sport and Recreation.

“Last year, the ACT Government provided initial funding of $400,000 to commence detailed planning and design for the proposed facility.”

Consultation is currently open, with the community invited to view the design on the YourSay website and provide feedback to the ACT Government by 30 March.

Construction will commence in mid-2022 following the design and consultation process.

Quotes attributable to Donald Jenkin, President of Dragon Boat ACT:

Dragon Boat ACT (DBACT) is delighted with the news from Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry confirming the ACT Government will be providing funds this year for a new building at Grevillea Park.

Together with a significant contribution from Dragon Boat ACT, the funding enables the building of a permanent home for the sport in Canberra.

DBACT would like to thank the Minister and all within Sport and Recreation who have worked hard for many years to achieve this outcome. The design is wonderful and we look forward to the completion of the new dragon boat facility.
