Celebrating inclusion in our community

Released 08/12/2022

The Access and Sensory Vaccination Clinic received the Chief Minister’s Award for Excellence at the 2022 Chief Minister’s Inclusion Awards, for its innovative approach to developing and delivering an accessible and inclusive COVID-19 vaccination clinic.

As the only clinic of its kind in Australia, the judging panel agreed the Clinic was an outstanding example of Government and community working together in a critical time to deliver an essential service in an accessible and inclusive space.

The ACT Access and Sensory Vaccination Clinic was co-designed with the Canberra community including people with disability. The Clinic is available to anyone who would benefit from a quieter environment, additional space, longer appointment time, or requires carer assistance. Carers are also able to receive their COVID vaccination when accompanying the person they care for.

The Chief Minister’s Inclusion Awards provide an annual acknowledgement of the outstanding achievements of people with disability who are leaders in the community as well as the business, organisations and individuals who have demonstrated their commitment to advancing disability inclusion in their workplace, business, and community.

The panel of judges, whose members include people with disability, Inclusion Council members, people with lived experience, sponsors and members of the Canberra business community, presented 13 awards to Canberra leaders with disability and to businesses, organisations and individuals for going above and beyond their core business to create a more inclusive Canberra for people with disability.

Quotes attributable to Fiona Barbaro, Executive Group Manager at ACT Health:

“The ACT Access and Sensory Vaccination Clinic was a true collaboration between government, community organisations and people with disability all working together to deliver an essential service.

“Thank you to all of the clinic’s clients, including their families, friends, carers and supports, for trusting and working with us.

“This program gave all Canberrans the same opportunity to access COVID-19 vaccination in an inclusive, safe and dignified way. It made sure that Canberrans living with disabilities and sensory issues were not left behind during the push to vaccinate the entire population.”
