Released 19/07/2022 - Joint media release

The ACT Government is committed to providing every family with access to a great local public school, with more places at schools in the inner north to cater for families choosing public education.

The ACT Government will modernise and expand Majura Primary School by up to 300 places, as growth in the region increases demand.

As our city continues to grow, the ACT Government is increasing school capacity through the installation of three new Modular Learning Centres (MLCs), and re-using eight existing MLCs, across ACT public schools to meet projected enrolment growth and classroom needs.

Investing in flexible, high-quality MLCs allows the ACT Government to meet changing demand across the ACT public school system.

This initiative builds on the 22 MLCs across 18 schools funded through the 2021-22 Budget and the August 2020 Economic and Fiscal Update.

Quotes attributable to Chief Minister, Andrew Barr:

As Canberra grows, the ACT Government will continue to deliver on our election commitments to build more school and invest in our world-class public education system.

We are building new and expanded schools in growing communities, and renewing the schools that Canberrans know and love right across the city.

Now is the time to invest in our city, in infrastructure that is built for Canberra, to ensure that the Canberra of 2030 continues to be one of the most liveable cities in the world.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Education and Early Childhood Development, Yvette Berry:

More and more families are choosing public schools for their children’s education in the ACT and we’ve been seeing that play out in the Inner North.

The expansion and modernisation of Majura Primary School will provide up to 300 extra places for students from the Inner North to attend their local primary school. I look forward to the seeing this work getting underway.

I’m also pleased to announce we will be installing three new Modular Learning Centres, and re-using eight existing ones, across our system through funding in the Budget. MLCs give us important flexibility across the system and allows us to further meet demand where they are needed.
