Hundreds of jobs will be supported through the raising of London Circuit, after the National Capital Authority provided works approval for the project.
The investment is a key part of the ACT Government’s plan to create and protect local jobs by delivering infrastructure that is built for Canberra and built to support the city Canberrans want in the future.
The approval means work can commence on raising London Circuit to form an at-grade intersection with Commonwealth Avenue.
“The project is a step forward in bringing the city and the lake closer. It will support many of the additional infrastructure commitments the ACT Government has planned in the city centre, including the extension of the light rail network to Woden, the renewal of the Canberra Theatre precinct and the Acton Park boardwalk,” said Chief Minister Andrew Barr.
“One of the Government’s priorities is to support our long-term economic prosperity through strategic infrastructure investments. The delivery of our infrastructure program will not only support our employment market over the coming years – but will deliver a more connected, sustainable and vibrant places to live in the future.”
Minister for Transport Chris Steel said that the raising of London Circuit is a key supporting piece of infrastructure for Stage 2 of light rail to Woden which will deliver better public transport to Canberra’s southside.
“This major piece of supporting infrastructure will allow light rail to travel from London Circuit on to Commonwealth Avenue,” said Minister Steel.
“The works will include new pedestrian footpath links and dedicated cycle lanes. Raising London Circuit will turn a busy and hard-to-navigate road interchange, into a more people-friendly place for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.”
Around 60,000 cubic metres of fill will be used to raise the current road to form an at-grade intersection with Commonwealth Avenue. Two of the existing cloverleaf ramps will also be removed, with access routes via Edinburgh Avenue and Constitution Avenue channelling traffic to the City’s west and east.
The installation of traffic lights on the Parkes Way roundabout at Coranderrk Street to help improve traffic flow in and around the city during the London Circuit works has also been approved by the NCA.
We have also funded new pedestrian signals and a path around City Hill, linking Edinburgh Avenue and Constitution Avenue.
Procurement for the raising of London Circuit has commenced and works are expected to get underway later this year. The most disruptive construction work is likely to begin in 2023 with the removal of the Commonwealth Avenue overpasses over London Circuit.
