Sustainable Household Scheme wins national sustainability award

Released 01/04/2022

The ACT Government’s Sustainable Household Scheme, which offers zero interest loans to households to install sustainable products in their homes, has won a national award.

The scheme received the Future Cities award at last night’s 33rd Banksia National Sustainability Awards, which shines a spotlight on individuals, communities, businesses and governments for their innovation, achievement and commitment to creating more sustainable communities.

Winning the Future Cities award is a huge achievement for the ACT and just another example of how the ACT is leading the way on climate action across the country.

It is an honour to receive national recognition through the Banksia Award for our effective policies to reduce emissions in the ACT.

The Sustainable Household Scheme offers zero interest loans to households to install sustainable products in their homes or purchase a zero-emission vehicle. Since the launch in September 2021, the Scheme has supported over 4,000 applications from households with around $30 million in loans settled.

The Scheme is the first in Australia to offer a full suite of sustainable products. The incentivised uptake of these products through the Scheme is helping make them more accessible to more people making it easier for Canberrans to play their part towards building a more sustainable future.

The Sustainable Household Scheme is not only helping households reduce their energy bills and contributing to our emission-reduction targets; it’s also supporting Canberra businesses and creating local jobs. The scheme’s top eight suppliers have premises in the ACT and are receiving more than $18 million worth of new business.

Based on the early success of the scheme, it has the potential to be one of the most successful examples of policy development and implementation that the ACT Government has undertaken.

Both the ACT Government’s Sustainable Household Scheme and the Zero Emissions Vehicles Program were finalists in the Banksia Awards, demonstrating the ACT’s position as a national leader on climate action.
