Following a National Cabinet meeting on Friday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a $2 billion funding boost to the states and territories for social housing.
The ACT will receive $50m of the additional funding.
The Territory will have flexibility in how we permanently boost social housing in Canberra, including through new builds, expanding existing renewal programs, and renovating or refurbishing any existing but currently uninhabitable housing stock. We will announce further details on the allocation of the additional funding in the coming months.
The Prime Minister’s announcement continues to progress the new National Housing Accord, a shared ambition between the Federal and State/Territory Government’s to build one million new homes over five years from 2024. It also builds on the work of National Cabinet on renters’ rights and planning reforms.
In the coming months, the ACT Government will continue to expand our partnership with the Federal Government to address housing affordability, supply, and homelessness. The forthcoming Territory Budget will include funding to support the next phase of our plan to increase housing supply and affordability.
