Next steps in Canberra Theatre Centre renewal

Released 08/10/2023 - Joint media release

Planning for the future expanded Canberra Theatre Centre is moving to the next stage, with a community consultation process now open until Monday 20 November 2023.

The expanded Canberra Theatre Centre project, including the new 2,000 seat theatre, is intended to attract more performing artists and shows to Canberra, supporting our economy and enhancing cultural life.

The community consultation will contribute to design development and helps the design team to understand what people want from their live performance experiences.

Design, consultation and approval processes will continue into 2024 and will inform planning for the project’s construction phase.

This consultation is an opportunity to contribute to the venue expansion and precinct development which is being designed to cater for audiences for the next 50+ years.

Quotes attributable to Chief Minister, Andrew Barr MLA:

Canberra has been missing out on many shows and performers because our current venues are too small and ageing.

This project can change that.

It will also drive more tourist activity in the city and support our retail and hospitality businesses, and night time economy.

Quotes attributable to Minister for the Arts, Tara Cheyne MLA:

The Canberra Theatre Centre transformation is a city shaping project that will bring us closer to our ambition for Canberra to be recognised as Australia’s arts capital.

We want to hear what matters most to people when they come to a live performance, what are their challenges, and what are their big ideas to create an iconic, vibrant and inclusive Canberra Theatre Centre where everyone feels welcome.
