South Korea and Japan Trade Mission

Released 15/04/2023

The Chief Minister will lead an ACT Government trade mission this week to South Korea and Japan.  The Government is building investment, infrastructure and industry relationships in key markets to support the Territory’ trade and climate action objectives.

Both Korea and Japan are identified as key markets in the ACT Government’s International Engagement Strategy and T2030: ACT Tourism Strategy 2023 – 2030.

The Government seeks to connect Canberra with places, markets and sectors where we have common interests. This mission has a focus on the electrification of the ACT.

During the mission, meetings will be held with LG, H2 Korea, Samsung, Hyundai, Panasonic and other relevant businesses on the implementation of our net zero emissions by 2045 plan, as set out in the ACT Climate Change Strategy.

These meetings will focus on the electrification of the ACT, including the supply of public and private electric transport, the technology and energy needs of households and the appliances that will allow them to electrify.

A short visit to Canberra’s first Sister City, Nara, will also occur. This is timed to celebrate the 30th anniversary of our Sister City relationship.

The mission will also include a site visit to the Seoul Arts Centre. This will offer valuable insight into modern theatre precincts, in light of the upcoming Canberra Theatre Centre Redevelopment.

The cost of the Chief Minister’s Delegation is approximately $25,000. This is met from the ACT Executive 2022-23 budget. The final cost will be reported as part of the regular travel reports.
