Counting down to New Year’s Eve in Canberra

Released 30/12/2024

The countdown is on for Canberrans to gather on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin to see in the New Year with spectacular fireworks displays at 9pm and midnight.

New Year’s Eve promises to be the party of the year in Canberra, and we are expecting a great turn out from the community.  Make sure you pre-plan and be prepared so you can enjoy a relaxing and safe night out with family and friends.

Festivities begin from 6pm, with attendees urged to get there early to find a good spot at one of the four celebration hubs at Rond Terrace, Commonwealth Place, Regatta Point (near the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre) and Ferry Gate (near Nerang Pool).

Mix 106.3 will broadcast the fireworks soundtrack live for each show as they launch from Central Basin and Commonwealth Avenue Bridge.

Each hub will feature local DJs, a variety of food and drink options and amenities. Pack a picnic or choose a snack from the many food vendors available – visit the Events ACT website for more details.

After the fireworks you can head into the City to support our local businesses, with restaurants and venues able to extend their trading hours, and the celebrations.

Free public transport services will be available to and from the event. Light rail services have been extended with the last service departing from Gungahlin Place stop at 1.00am and Alinga Street stop at 1.30am. Additional bike racks will be available at the hub locations as well as additional Neuron Scooter designated parking bays close to hub entrances – check the Neuron app for details.

If you do plan on driving, there are many carparks around the lake's perimeter within the National Triangle, Reid and in the city. Some roads will be closed, including Parkes Way and Commonwealth Avenue Bridge as a result of the festivities. Be safe on the roads, it will be busy on New Year's Eve.

Visit nye.events.canberra.com.au for more information on the New Year’s Eve celebrations including road closures and transport information.
