Community engagement on new Canberra Aquatic Centre

Released 29/09/2025 - Joint media release

Canberrans have seven weeks to have their say about what features they want to see in the new Canberra Aquatic Centre to be built in Commonwealth Park.

The aquatic centre, which will be located close to light rail stops on Commonwealth Avenue, will include a mix of pools, kids splash-play areas, and facilities that will support a range of aquatic and recreational activities.

A seven-week consultation period starting this school holidays, will capture community views to inform the design and functionality of the new aquatic centre, such as equipment and amenities and year-round usability.

Feedback from Canberrans, key sporting organisations, community groups and peak bodies, will assist in designing a facility that meets the needs of as many users as possible within the available project budget.

The ACT and Australian governments have jointly committed $137.8 million to plan and deliver the new facility.

Construction of the new Centre is expected to start in this parliamentary term, following the finalisation of design and approval processes.

Find out more about the new aquatic centre and provide feedback online via the YourSay Conversations website until 14 November 2025.

A series of pop-up information stalls will also be held throughout the consultation period with details to be advised via the website.

This consultation follows engagement undertaken by the National Capital Authority earlier this year on the Commonwealth Park Concept Vision 2025, which included a new aquatics facility that strengthens the park’s connection to water and landscape.

Quotes attributable to ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr:

“The new Canberra Aquatic Centre aims to deliver modern, inclusive, and sustainable aquatic and recreation facilities for all Canberrans to enjoy.

The new centre will be designed to welcome as wide a range of users as possible within the project budget.

We are asking Canberrans to share their ideas on what facilities and features are most important – your feedback will help shape this new facility.”

Quotes attributable to ACT Senator Katy Gallagher:

“This is a big investment in the future of our city and will deliver a brand new aquatic centre in central location but also importantly will free up land to unlock the construction of the new National Convention Centre precinct.

We want this aquatic centre to be something that Canberra families, kids and keen swimmers can all enjoy for decades to come.

We want to make sure the aquatic centre meets the Canberra community’s expectations, so I’d encourage anyone with an interest in this project to get online and have their say.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Canberra Alicia Payne:

“Commonwealth Park is a place for the whole Canberra community. This new aquatic centre will strengthen the connection between the city and the lake, while providing facilities that locals and visitors alike can enjoy.

Community feedback is vital to make sure the design reflects Canberra’s unique character and national capital role.”
