Canberra and ACT businesses will be at the centre of activities at the Australian Pavilion this week at Expo 2025 Osaka.
The Expo, which will run from 13 April to 13 October 2025, is expected to attract more than 28 million visitors from around the world.
The ACT Government, together with all State and Territory Governments, is partnering with the Australian Government and Austrade to deliver a range of events and promotions at the Expo.
Thanks to strong support from the Australian Government, and in close collaboration with Austrade, the ACT Government is using this global platform to:
- Promote Canberra as a leader in science, technology, climate adaptation, space, the digital economy, and education
- Foster international partnerships and investment opportunities
- Support ACT-based businesses and researchers to build global connections
- Celebrate Canberra’s rich culture and creativity
“Canberra will be sharing its story with a global audience, one that is defined by innovation, sustainability, and strong international partnerships,” the Chief Minister said.
The ACT and Australian Governments will also host a special ceremony at the Australian Pavilion to celebrate the 30+ year sister city relationship between Canberra and Nara.
“Our partnership with Nara is one of the ACT’s most enduring international relationships. Expo 2025 offers a timely opportunity to celebrate this connection and explore new opportunities for cultural and economic collaboration,” Mr Barr said.
“The Expo mission is an important opportunity to reaffirm one of Canberra’s oldest international relationships and highlight the Territory’s economic, research and cultural credentials on a global stage.
“The ACT’s participation in the Australian Pavilion is about strengthening Canberra’s global ties and showcasing our city as a hub of innovation, creativity and collaboration.
“Our long-standing sister city relationship with Nara has fostered decades of cultural connection and mutual respect. We are proud to reaffirm that partnership through this visit and through our involvement in Expo 2025 Osaka.”
While in Japan, the ACT delegation will visit sister city Nara and participate in a program of industry and investor meetings in Tokyo and Osaka, promoting Canberra’s liveability, investment pipeline, and sector strengths.
One of the local companies joining the ACT delegation is MCi Carbon, a global leader in carbon removal technology headquartered in the ACT.
“We’re proud to showcase Canberra-based innovators like MCi Carbon, world leaders in decarbonisation technologies. They’re a great example of the talent and potential our city brings to international markets,” the Chief Minister said.
The ACT Government’s presence at Expo 2025 supports its broader international engagement across the Indo-Pacific region and reflects its commitment to growing Canberra’s global profile.
The cost of the Chief Minister’s participation in Expo 2025 and associated activities in Japan is approximately $14,000, funded from within the existing ACT Executive budget. Final costs will be reported in line with standard travel reporting procedures.
