Free public transport for New Year’s Eve celebrations

Released 30/12/2025

Canberra is ready to ring in 2026 with a spectacular New Year’s Eve celebration on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin.

Bus and light rail services will be free all day, so you can leave the car at home and enjoy a stress-free trip to the festivities. Simply tap on and off as usual to register a zero-dollar fare.

Four celebration areas will be activated along the lake at Rond Terrace, Wendouree Drive, John Dunmore Lang Place (Commonwealth Place), and Ferry Gate (Regatta Point).

Each location will feature local DJs from 6:00 pm and a variety of food trucks.

Two dazzling fireworks displays over Central Basin will light up the sky at 9:00 pm and midnight, with a synchronised soundtrack broadcast live on Mix 106.3.

Tune in for the perfect soundtrack whether you’re lakeside or celebrating at home.

Public transport is the easiest way to get to the lake this New Year’s Eve, and it’s free all day.

If you’re driving, make sure you check parking options and routes in advance. With a new activations on Wendouree Drive and easy access to Russell carparks, there are plenty of options—but planning ahead is essential.

I want to wish all Canberrans and their families a safe and happy new year.

Travel tips:

  1. Use free public transport: buses and light rail run all day at no cost.
  2. Check maps and routes: visit the Events ACT website for locations, parking details, and suggested driving routes.
  3. Arrive early: activations open at 6:00 pm, so allow time for travel and parking.
  4. Tune in to Mix 106.3 for the synchronised fireworks soundtrack.

Due to construction, there will be no activation at Barrine Drive (Regatta Point) this year.
