Support Canberra's multicultural community this weekend

Released 19/02/2021

I encourage Canberrans to get our and support multicultural businesses and organisations this weekend, which traditionally would have seen Canberrans out enjoying the National Multicultural Festival.

The festival is regarded by many Canberrans as their favourite event in our city (I know it’s one of mine)! While it will not go ahead this year, there are still ways to support our multicultural communities this weekend and throughout the year.

All across our city, town centres and local shops there are restaurants and businesses run by multicultural families. So please consider making a reservation and feast on a cuisine you might have enjoyed at the Festival.

There are also plenty of multicultural events and activities.

For example from 10am to 4pm on Saturday there is a Lunar New Year event at Grazier Lane in Belconnen to celebrate the Year of the Ox. There'll be street food, music and dragon dancing.

Or from 4pm to 5pm on Saturday at Glebe Park there is a free Rueda lesson – this is a social Spanish dance set to Salsa music.

From 17-28 February the Jewish International Film Festival is on at Dendy Cinemas.

If you love Italian food, you can learn to make your own tomato sauce at Passata Day from 10am to 12pm on Saturday at the Canberra Environment Centre at The Link in Ginninderry for $15 per person.

And Sunday marks the International Mother Languages Day, which brings together the people of the ACT and surrounding region to raise awareness of the value of all languages, especially endangered languages. A walk celebrating this day starts at 10.30am near the International Flags Display near Questacon.

The National Multicultural Festival will be held a year from now on the weekend of Friday 18 to Sunday 20 February 2022. Mark it in your calendars, and stay tuned for more information as we plan an unforgettable 25th anniversary.
