Released 28/06/2022

Australia’s biggest celebration of cultural diversity will be back in 2023 to celebrate a major milestone, the National Multicultural Festival returns to the city for its 25th anniversary on 17, 18 and 19 February 2023 and also expands to Glebe Park.

Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Tara Cheyne MLA, said she was excited for the iconic community event to be held again.

“Canberra is a proudly multicultural and inclusive city, and the National Multicultural Festival is the embodiment of this – a three-day event where multicultural communities showcase and share their culture, history and heritage through food, art, song and dance.”

“It’s an event that is close to many people’s hearts. I’m pleased to share the expanded festival footprint and dates for next year’s celebration, as we know that multicultural groups across the ACT spend months planning stalls, preparing workshops and practising performances,” said Minister Cheyne.

“The 2023 festival will coincide with the 25th anniversary of the event and we’re planning on making this one to remember, to celebrate this important part of Canberra’s history.

“Thanks, in particular, to the NMF Community Panel Reference Group. Their support has been invaluable as we plan for the 25th anniversary.

“The City Renewal Authority will support the event again in 2023 and work with city businesses to leverage the opportunities provided by one of Canberra’s most loved events.”

To support the participation of multicultural groups and organisations, the 2023 National Multicultural Festival Grants Program will open on July 25.

“I’m happy to announce that this year there is a doubling of the festival grants funding, from $90,000 to $180,000”, said Minister Cheyne. “This will allow even greater participation from the community as stallholders and performers. We will particularly be encouraging applications from new and emerging communities as the festival is such a great way to share their culture.”
