Better community infrastructure for Canberra with work on fast-tracked projects complete

Released 12/07/2021

Canberrans will benefit from new and improved community infrastructure following the completion of several fast-tracked infrastructure projects which have been supporting local jobs through the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Last year we moved quickly to establish small scale infrastructure works to support local jobs and provide Canberrans with better services – and I’m pleased to say many of these projects are now complete,” said Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel.

“For example, we have invested in paving and other improvements at 13 local shopping centres in older suburbs helping to maintain them vibrant as hubs for community activity and supporting local businesses which are based there.

“We have also invested to improve connectivity in our active travel and public transport networks, with two new park and ride locations now available in Lyneham and Evatt, the next stage of the Heysen Street Link completed and a new bike and ride facility ready for use on Barry Drive,” Minister Steel said.

“Work is also almost finished on two new modern, safe and accessible public toilet facilities at Lake Tuggeranong and John Knight Memorial Park, with both expected to be open for use in the coming weeks.

“To complement the annual road resurfacing program, we have increased asphalt patching at various locations across the ACT to fix potholes and ensure we continue to have high quality roads across Canberra.”

This work included specific patching programs included Banks, Gordon, Conder, Isabella Plains, Gilmore, Weston, Curtin, Symonston, Chapman and Hughes.

“To round out this program of works we have invested in new bus stops and listened to the community on the relocation of existing bus stops in growth suburbs such as Taylor, Coombs, Wright and Denman Prospect,” Minister Steel said.

“These community projects have been delivered alongside work on the ACT Government’s largest-ever pipeline of major projects to protect and create jobs while delivering the infrastructure our city needs – so that we can bounce back better.”
