Bulky waste collections available in all Canberra suburbs

Released 05/07/2021

Bulky waste collections are rolling out across Canberra with residents in Woden, Weston, Molonglo, the inner-north and the inner-south now all having access to the popular service, in addition to suburbs where it was already available.

“Since bookings became available to all suburbs nearly a month ago, more than 400 residents pre-booked their first bulky waste collection. These have now started, which means Canberrans can quickly and easily get rid of unwanted bulky items,” Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel said.

“More than 6,000 ACT households have saved themselves a trip to the tip since collections began in July last year.

“This includes the fantastic take-up in Belconnen which started in April, where over 1,503 residents have made a booking so far.

“We have fast-tracked the rollout so that every Canberra household can dispose of the bulky household items they no longer need, including items that can be rehomed to support local charities.

“Every Canberra household is eligible to book one free collection per year of up to two cubic metres for a range of items including furniture, household appliances, white goods and electrical equipment.

“Many collected items find new homes in the community through charity organisations like GIVIT, The Salvation Army and Vinnies.

“So far the service has achieved a 42 per cent resource recovery rate which is a fantastic result and more than four times the national average of 10 per cent. It means that we’re diverting valuable metals, white goods and other items from going to landfill and giving some items a second life whilst providing a valuable service to the community.”

First time participants booking their bulky waste collection should be aware that hazardous materials such as batteries and fuel must be removed from items before collection. For a full list of items which are eligible for collection please visit the website at www.act.gov.au/bulkywaste. Canberrans can also make a booking through this site.

Residents do not need to be home for the collection appointment, but all bulky waste items must be left inside the property boundary and in an easily accessible location from 7 am on the morning of collection.

For advice on disposing of a range of household items, including those not eligible for the bulky waste service, Canberrans can search the Recyclopaedia, a handy guide to recycling and waste at www.act.gov.au/recyclopaedia.
