Construction begins on new Woden transport interchange

Released 05/07/2021

The ACT Government is delivering more jobs and better infrastructure for Canberra’s southside, with construction starting on Woden’s new public transport interchange.

“A new transport interchange is one of the projects that is transforming Woden town centre, together with the new CIT campus, a new community centre and the arrival of light rail,” said Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel.

“With the project approved and delivery partners appointed, work is now underway to build a new on-street interchange on Callam Street, including the Woden light rail stop and bus layover facilities.

“This is going to be a disruptive period of construction and I’d like to thank the Woden community and businesses in advance for their patience as we build better public transport facilities to support the town centre’s regeneration.”

The new interchange will feature 10,000m2 of passenger-friendly space and expanded on-street interchange of 18 bus stops, an increase from the current 11. A light rail station will be built, operating as a rapid bus stop in the interim until light rail reaches Woden.

Callam Street will be permanently closed to private vehicles between Bradley Street and Matilda Street from around mid-August with the final on-street interchange creating a pedestrian-friendly space between the town centre and Woden Town Park.

The first phase construction work includes building:

  • new bus layovers on Launceston and Easty Streets, including driver amenity facilities.
  • Road improvements on Wilbow, Easty, Launceston and Callam streets
  • New traffic signals installed at the Bowes/Launceston, Callam/Launceston and Easty/Launceston intersections.
  • New pedestrian crossings across the town centre.

From today, community consultation will also commence on a new North/South road connection linking Bowes and Bradley Streets as a local access shared zone.

The community will also be invited to have a say on a new pedestrian boulevard linking the new public transport interchange with the Woden Town Centre as part of the new CIT Woden Campus which will be built on the site of the current Woden bus interchange.

“The ACT Government will be undertaking further consultation on multiple aspects of  CIT Woden in the coming months as work progresses on the design of a new world class vocational education and training campus,” said Minister Steel.

“The public transport interchange will be closely integrated with the new CIT Woden campus providing direct transport access for 6500 students and staff."
