With construction soon to start on light rail to Woden, Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel will tonight make his first address to the project’s dedicated Community Reference Group.
“It’s an exciting time for light rail as we move closer to the first works getting underway on Canberra’s biggest-ever infrastructure project,” said Minister Steel.
“We recognise the importance of community consultation and engagement at every step of the way.
“That’s why we’ve brought together the Light Rail Community Reference Group to provide a voice for Canberrans in the delivery process. This group will meet regularly to give the ACT Government important insights into the community’s needs and priorities for the project.”
The group includes Canberrans from a diverse range of ages, backgrounds and communities, to ensure the ACT Government hears from a range of perspectives. Participants include representatives from Pedal Power, Living Streets Canberra, Australian National University and Council of the Ageing, alongside other Canberrans advocating for different stakeholder groups and communities.
“Regular engagement with this group throughout the coming months and years will mean light rail is planned, designed and delivered in a transparent, inclusive and consultative way,” said Minister Steel.
“At key points throughout the project we will also be undertaking open consultation and engagement with the entire Canberra community so that everyone has an opportunity to have their say.
“This will include on key project approvals like the project’s Environmental Assessment and Works Approvals, as well as design issues like the placement of stops on the way to Woden and the integration between light rail and other types of transport.”
Tonight’s meeting will discuss plans for upcoming early works as well as the ACT Government’s planning to manage construction-related traffic issues through the newly-formed Disruption Taskforce.
Some of the Community Reference Group members will also present to the Minister and project team on the issues and priorities important to their communities.
