Design of new local shops now open for consultation

Released 22/03/2021

Design work is underway for significant shopping centre upgrades in Campbell, Duffy and Kaleen with the Canberra community invited to have their say on the draft designs.

Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel said this work was delivering on a substantial election commitment and completion of these projects would support local jobs and Canberra businesses.

“The ACT Government is committed to investing in local shopping centre precincts to improve their look and feel, upgrade safety and accessibility as well as ensuring local shops are vibrant places that the community can enjoy,” Minister Steel said.

“We are now releasing substantial designs to the community and asking for feedback on what we’ve got right, what should be prioritised and how we can make their local shops somewhere they want to be.

“Across the three locations the focus for feedback will broadly be on accessibility including footpaths, car parking and crossing locations.

“In addition, improving spaces for gathering and enjoying the public space whether that be with new seating and landscaping, or lighting.

“Over in Duffy, we’re particularly interested in hearing from children and families about the existing play space beside the shopping centre and what improvements can be made to make it a fun and enjoyable space to play.

“Feedback will be used to inform the final designs which we expect to be completed in the middle of this year.”

These upgrades are intended to encourage Canberrans to shop locally, in turn providing improved financial outcomes for businesses and stronger community connections by bringing people together at their local centre.

“We recognise that including community feedback into projects like these ensures the best outcome for those that are regular visitors to the local shops,” Minister Steel said.

“I encourage the community to head to YourSay, take a look at the designs and provide feedback either electronically or in person at one of the pop-ups planned at the local shops.

“The design phase of this project has created approximately six new jobs with many more expected to be created once the three shopping centres move into the construction phase.

“Infrastructure investment is critical to our recovery from the pandemic, particularly as we move our projects to a ‘shovel ready’ state. Now more than ever, we need to protect local jobs, invest in local businesses and support our city’s economic recovery.”

In the 20-21 budget the ACT Government also invested in detail design for improvements to Pialligo, this included formalised carparking, new footpaths along Beltana Road and traffic improvements including a new left-in, left-out intersection with Beltana Road, Kallaroo Road and Pialligo Avenue.

This work will commence in the coming months and will include further consultation with residents and businesses.
