JobTrainer places going fast in Canberra

More than 500 young people and job seekers have signed up for JobTrainer courses in the ACT so far, taking advantage of free training in areas of skills need.

Opening in November last year, the JobTrainer program is delivering free training places to job seekers and young people in the ACT.

Minister for Skills Chris Steel said it was great to see such strong take up of JobTrainer in the first few months.

“To date we have seen approximately 530 enrolments in free training places in the ACT. This equates to an investment of approximately $5 million in skills development in the ACT from this program.

“The ACT Government is rapidly assisting Canberrans level up their skills to enter or re-enter the workforce to create more jobs and enhance our city’s economic recovery.

“We’re seeing approximately 58 per cent of enrolments to date being job seekers and 47 per cent young people taking up the program, with a small portion fitting into both categories

“It is also very encouraging to see that women are taking advantage of free training have made up approximately 59 per cent of enrolments.

“JobTrainer will support the more vulnerable members of our community through the SPARK Ginninderry employment and training initiative. JobTrainer SPARK programs will start in February with a school leaver program delivered in partnership with CIT,” said Minister Steel.

Minister Steel said feedback from industry had been positive, with CIT in particular collaborating with industry partners to codesign JobTrainer industry relevant short courses.

“Of the over 500 enrolments taken up to date, CIT are delivering over 100 places, with a further 600 expressions of interest currently being assessed”

“We’re seeing a strong commitment from ACT employers and industry segments to employ JobTrainer graduates.  

“These courses are generating real outcomes for young people and job seekers that have been impacted by COVID-19.”

To date, the most popular courses for enrolments are in the fields of:

  • Security operations
  • Community services
  • Building and construction
  • Early childhood education and care
  • Leadership and project management
  • Fitness
  • Hospitality and Tourism
  • Business

JobTrainer represents a $16.75 million investment in skills development and is a key part of the ACT Government’s plan to keep Canberrans employed and grow the number of jobs in the ACT to more than 250,000 by 2025.

JobTrainer is jointly funded by the Australian Government and ACT Government.
