New Park and Ride on its way for the northside

Released 19/07/2021

The ACT Government is making it easier for Canberrans to hop on public transport, with delivery of the new Well Station Park and Ride underway.

“Canberrans on the northside will soon have access to a new 170 space park and ride facility on Well Station Drive, providing a great option for people who want to save on parking while making their daily commute easier and more sustainable,” said Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel.

“This project is part of the ACT Government’s program of investment in local infrastructure to support jobs throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and improve transport connectivity across Canberra.

“Earlier this year we released the ACT Transport Recovery Plan with the goal of returning public transport patronage to its pre-pandemic levels and continue growing it in the years ahead.

“One of the ways we will achieve this is by continuing to invest in public transport infrastructure and active travel. When this project is complete we will have 24 park and ride facilities available right across the ACT, making them really available and accessible.”

Key features of the new Well Station Drive Park and Ride include:

  • parking for more than 170 vehicles
  • bike parking facilities
  • designated accessible parking spaces
  • access point from Well Station Drive
  • provision of right turn bay and left turn slip lane into the facility from Well Station Drive and standard left/right movements out
  • new active travel paths linking to the existing signalised intersection of Flemington Road and Well Station Drive, including a 2.5 metre wide path connecting the existing bus stops on Well Station Drive
  • new and upgraded street lighting
  • line marking, signage and landscaping.

“In addition to the new Park and Ride, Canberra’s 14th light rail stop at Sandford Street is also nearing completion. This will improve access to workplaces and service the Mitchell industrial neighbourhood as it continues to grow,” said Minister Steel.

“We will continue to invest strategically in public transport and active travel to make it easier for Canberrans to travel cheaply and reliably, while cutting emissions for a cleaner environment.

“Infrastructure investment is critical to our recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Through projects like these we are protecting local jobs, investing in local businesses and supporting our city’s economic recovery.”
