Luna eclipses all other pet names in 2022

Released 27/12/2022

There must be something in the stars in 2022 as both the ACT’s top dog and top cat name is Luna – fur real.

If you have a Cavoodle or domestic short hair cat named Luna, congratulations – you have the most popular pet breed and name combination in Canberra in 2022.

Depending on how keen you are to be part of a trend, this may be claws for concern.

“In July, the ACT Government introduced compulsory annual cat registration in the ACT to strengthen responsible pet ownership, following the introduction of annual dog registration in 2021,” said Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel.

“Annual registration provides Domestic Animal Services with access to up-to-date information, so they can contact owners should the need arise and return lost or roaming pets to their families where they belong.

“One bonus is that the annual registration process also provides us with information about popular dog and cat names and breeds in the ACT, and alerts us to changing trends.”

Of all dogs currently registered in the ACT, the top 10 dog names and breeds for 2022 are listed below.

Pet names also tell us a lot about people’s interests and passions and it turns out Canberrans love their food. Some of the food related pet names include Haloumi, Jellybean, Noodle, Taco, Schnitzel, Cookie, Crumpet, Pumpkin, Wasabi, Lamington, Dumpling, Lambchop, Cinnamon and Mango.

Canberra pet owners are also inspired by their favourite film, TV and book characters when naming their pets including Maverick, Loki, Bruce Wayne, James Bond, Xena, Cindarella, Woody, Simba, Buzz Lightyear, Princess Leia, Frodo, Homer, Skeletor, Rocky, Romeo, Gatsby, Mr Darcy and Mr Bingley.

“Being a pet owner is enjoyable and rewarding, however, it involves responsibilities. It is your responsibility to ensure your pet is happy and healthy, and not negatively impacting the community. Keeping registration details up to date is just one part of being a responsible pet owner,” said Minister Steel.

“With the weather heating up over summer and many Canberrans enjoying a well-deserved holiday, your pet’s health and wellbeing needs to be taken into account when making holiday plans.

“Canberrans are reminded not to leave their pets unattended while going on a holiday. Ensure your pets’ carer is familiar with its feeding and exercise requirements. There are also several boarding kennels located around the ACT that can care for your pet.”
