The next stage of building the CIT Woden Campus and public transport interchange is well underway, with one tower crane installed and a second scheduled to arrive in October.
“We’re going to see a significant amount of construction of the main CIT building over the next 12 months,” said Minister for Skills Chris Steel.
“These cranes will move heavy loads within the site. One of their key tasks in the coming months is to support getting the main timber structure out of the ground.
“We look forward to seeing construction at the site move full steam ahead to deliver this state-of-the-art educational facility for Woden.”
Students from Curtin Primary, Hughes Primary, Lyons Early Childhood School and Malkara School, and children who live in Grand Central Towers, were recently invited to submit their creative suggestions to name the cranes.
The cranes will take on the two names with the most votes.

About the cranes
1. The cranes onsite are called ‘luffing’ cranes and lift loads by moving the arm vertically.
2. Each can lift up to 24 tonnes of weight and stand seven stories tall.
3. To minimise pollution and noise the cranes are entirely electric.
4. The cranes are equipped with a system that prevents them from swinging loads beyond the site boundary, avoiding neighbouring buildings and public spaces.
5. The cranes will be onsite for approximately 12 months.
