Stromlo riding high with permanent funding boost

Released 06/02/2023

Canberrans can expect continued investment into Stromlo Forest Park with the ACT Government committed to ensuring the facility stays one of Australia’s premier sport and mountain biking destinations.

Following the completion of upgrades to the car park, a paid parking model will be introduced later in the year, with all revenue generated to be invested directly back into Stromlo. This includes the construction of new trails as well as ongoing maintenance of the existing network.

Stromlo Forest Park is a premier recreation destination and continues to experience growing popularity, attracting around 560,000 visitors each year.

This popularity is placing pressure on the facilities in the park. The site requires ongoing maintenance and new, interesting and challenging tracks and trails to keep its status as one of Australia’s best places to experience recreational activities.

This investment model is based on the success of the Arboretum which uses the same approach to deliver new infrastructure and a better experience for locals and visitors.

To inform future investment of the revenue, the ACT Government will also begin work on a five year Stromlo Forest Park Trails Masterplan, that will involve public consultation.

This Trails Masterplan will review existing trails and plan for new trails for key site users including runners, mountain bike riders, road cyclists, equestrian riders, and the general public.

Parking fees will be modest and accommodate those who need to use the park for long periods of time: 15 minutes drop off- free, 15mins - 3 hours - $1.75, 3-6 hours - $2.75, 6+ hours $3.90.

For frequent users an annual $87 pass will also be available, this equates to $1.67 per week over the year.

Formal, paved parking around the Village was part of the Stromlo Forest Park Master Plan.

Paid Parking arrangements will be implemented following the construction of the formalised car parking facilities expected towards the end of 2023.

Information about this initiative will available on the Stromlo Forest Park website, as more detail becomes available.

Quotes attributable to Special Minister of State, Chris Steel:

“Canberra has a strong sporting community and we are looking forward to working with them to develop a Trails Masterplan for Stromlo Forest Park in 2023.

“The introduction of modest parking fees at Stromlo will see direct investment back into the Park’s tracks and trails to ensure that this remains a premier multi-purpose sporting facility.

“Stromlo Forest Park is used by mountain bikers, runners, cyclists, triathletes, equestrians, community groups and the public, and we’re working to ensure all users can enjoy the park safely while allowing for additional growth and asset improvement.

“It will be exciting to see the Criterium Track extension completed in the next few weeks. This will give non-car users a safer way to access the park, and the new connection to the pool will enable triathletes to seamlessly complete running, swimming and riding competitions.

“The Government also remains committed to our election commitment to progress a flow trail from Stromlo to the Cotter this term.”
