Fare free Fridays starts tomorrow

Released 05/12/2024

The ACT Labor Government is supporting all Canberrans with cost of living relief when fare free Fridays starts from tomorrow the 6th of December.

“We know that Canberrans are doing it tough right now and that cost can be a barrier to using public transport, that’s why at the election we committed to making public transport free for all Canberrans on Fridays,” said Minister for Transport Chris Steel.

“Tomorrow we’ll see people travelling across our public transport network, and it won’t cost them a cent.

“We anticipate that Fare free Fridays will save a family with two adults and two children around $1,000 a year if they catch a bus or light rail services every week.

“This is a really great way for Canberrans to get themselves to and from work, or take the opportunity to visit a business in the city or their local town centre and enjoy a free trip home.”

To take advantage of Fare Free Fridays all we’re asking Canberrans to do is tap on and off using their preferred payment method which includes a debit card, credit card, MyWay+ card, smartphone with Apple Pay, Google Wallet or QR code.

You will not be charged any fees on a Friday no matter how you decide to tap on or off. This process is just important for data collection across the public transport network, so we can monitor patronage and understand how people are moving around our city with free travel.

“Fare Free Fridays is also a great way to try out our new public transport ticketing system MyWay+,” said Minister for Transport Chris Steel.

“I encourage Canberrans to explore the new system, while not being charged and enjoying the benefits of free travel around our city every Friday.”

Fare Free Fridays will be available every Friday as part of a one year trial, delivering on Labor’s election commitment.
