The ACT Government is bringing public transport into the future with Canberrans encouraged to register their current MyWay cards for onboarding into the new system.
This will support the transfer of funds from existing customer accounts onto the new MyWay+ system which is expected to be operational in November this year.
At the same time a major milestone has been reached for the project with more than 200 people soon to be recruited to take part in user testing for the new MyWay+ system.
The user testing period will commence in September and will run for approximately six weeks. This critical testing period will provide valuable insight from a customer experience perspective.
Involvement will include an early hands-on experience in using the MyWay+ services, including the web portal, mobile app as well as testing the new equipment on board buses and at light rail stops from a customer experience perspective.
Transport Canberra will engage a range of different cohorts to conduct the implementation of the new system including members of our workforce, Transport Canberra and City Services Accessibility Reference Group, students, public transport advocates, first nations people and older Canberrans.
Further details on how the community can get involved in the MyWay+ user testing process will be communicated in the coming month.
“We’re now ramping up the delivery of our new public transport ticketing system MyWay+ with all Canberrans who use public transport encouraged to register their current MyWay card,” said Minister for Transport Chris Steel.
“By registering your current MyWay card now you can transfer your existing balance straight onto the new MyWay+ system and you’ll be ready to go.
“This next phase of different cohorts testing the functionality of the new system and the app is very exciting. It means we’re getting our first look at how the journey planning works, the ease of payment methods, and all the different features available for Canberrans to use to travel with the new system.
“For Canberrans who do not want to use the new features as part of the MyWay+ system there will still be a physical card available from a greater number of retail outlets, including the two major supermarket chains, or simply use a credit or debit card to tap on and off.
“There are currently four MyWay+ demonstration buses on the road, which are continuing to learn our public transport network to support the different types of travel that will be available on the new system. Canberrans who see one of these buses pull up at their stop as part of their regular commute will still have a free trip.”
The closure of the old MyWay system will be aligned, as planned, with the scheduled shut off of Optus’ 3G network in September. MyWay+ will then be operational across Canberra’s public transport network in November this year.
Between September and November travel will be free on all public transport across the ACT whilst the new MyWay+ hardware is installed on the bus fleet and final testing of the new MyWay+ system occurs.
Transport Canberra will advise the community soon on the exact date the old MyWay system will switch off following final advice from Optus.
