Supporting Canberra apprentices and trainees with the cost of living

Released 27/07/2024

The ACT Government will soon begin contacting eligible apprentices and trainees to arrange a $250 payment to assist with cost-of-living pressures.

This one-off payment was funded in the 2024-25 ACT Budget and is expected to support up to 5,700 apprentices and trainees while they undertake their training.

“We will contact eligible apprentices and trainees in the coming weeks to confirm eligibility and payment details, with payments expected to be made within four weeks of confirmation,” said Minister for Skills Chris Steel.

“The ACT Government is committed to supporting Canberrans to train for the jobs our growing community needs, including in renewable energy, construction, cyber security, the care sector and hospitality.

“This $250 payment will support apprentices and trainees living and working in Canberra with cost-of-living pressures while they complete their training.

“It’s part of our plan to grow, strengthen and diversify our city’s workforce as we continue to deliver important major new infrastructure projects like schools, hospitals and light rail.

“At the same time these payments will also support local businesses whose staff may be undertaking training under a national training contract.

“The payment is among a range of initiatives to support Canberra’s skilled workforce, to ensure we have the right mix of skills to support the jobs of the future.”

This cost of living initiative will support the ACT Government’s 300,000 jobs target – set to be delivered across Canberra by 2030.

To be eligible, apprentices and trainees:

  • Must be active as of 1 July 2024, under a national training contract.
  • Live in Canberra and be employed by an ACT employer.
