Supporting inclusivity in Canberra this International Day of People with Disability

Released 03/12/2022

The ACT Government is encouraging Canberrans to make our community inclusive and accessible for everyone this International Day of People with Disability (I-Day) with the 2022-23 Disability Inclusion Grants program.

Minister for Disability Emma Davidson said that I-Day, held on 3 December each year, was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate inclusion and the achievements of people with disability.

“Now in its 30th year, I-Day is a chance to remind us that we all have a role to play in ensuring people with disability have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of community life,” said Minister Davidson.

“By challenging perceptions, breaking down barriers and encouraging a more inclusive and respectful society, we are ensuring a future for Canberra which is deeply rooted in equity.”

A total of $100,000 in grant funding is now open to community groups, not-for-profit organisations and small businesses to deliver initiatives that promote social inclusion for people with disability.

“By funding these grants, we are encouraging community groups and small businesses to look at initiatives and activities which can address communication, behavioural and physical barriers to access and inclusion for all Canberrans,” said Minister Davidson.

In the past, these grants have funded a wide range of initiatives including:

  • Construction of an accessible carriage and ramp at Yarralumla Play Station
  • Installation of a hearing loop system at the Canberra Islamic Centre
  • Development of a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan for ACT Table Tennis Association
  • Website accessibility review and implementation for Canberra Community Law.

Applications close Monday 6 March 2023 for projects to commence from June 2023.
