Released 03/12/2020
The Report on the ACT Corrective Services Court Transport Unit Review was today tabled in the Legislative Assembly.
“As the new Minister for Corrections, my focus is on ensuring Corrective Services staff have the training and equipment they need to do their jobs safely and effectively,” Minister for Corrections Mick Gentleman said.
“This report makes it clear there is more to do to ensure Corrective Services staff have access to up to date and clear policies, adequate training, and can go to work in a safe environment.
“The findings related to staff training, the safety of Court Transport Unit vehicles and outdated policies require particular attention.
“I have instructed the Justice and Community Safety Directorate to urgently develop a plan of action to explore and address the findings of the report.”
The review took place between January 2020 and June 2020 and the report makes 22 recommendations, 20 of which relate to corrective services.
Minister Gentleman acknowledged the professionalism of Court Transport Unit staff, which was highlighted in the report.
“Staff in the transport unit have performed diligently throughout a period of significant change, including the transition from an old and unfit court complex to the new court cells.
“I want to make sure there’s an open dialogue between the Inspector, management, staff and detainees to foster a culture of improvement in ACT Corrective Services facilities.”
The ACT Government will provide a formal response in early 2021.
The report will be published on the ACT Inspector of Correctional Service website.
