ACT Fire & Rescue seeking new recruits

Released 28/05/2021

A new recruitment campaign is seeking to find the next generation of Canberra’s firefighters.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman encouraged ambitious Canberrans who are ‘ready, willing and able’ to apply to become a firefighter.

“Between now and 2024, we’re recruiting 99 additional firefighters on top of our existing numbers to ensure the ACT’s frontline emergency services are well resourced to keep Canberrans safe,” Minister Gentleman said.

“The first of these additional firefighters began their training in February and will graduate at the end of next month, with a new cohort beginning their Recruit College in July.

“ACT Fire & Rescue is now seeking aspiring firefighters for its 2022 Recruit College programs.”

“We strongly encourage people from a broad range of backgrounds to apply, in particular women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and people from the LGBTIQ community.”

The Ready. Willing. Able. campaign is encouraging community minded and ambitious people from all walks of life to apply to become a firefighter in 2022.

ACT Fire & Rescue A/g Chief Officer Matthew Mavity said a career as a firefighter presented meaningful challenges and a rewarding lifestyle.

“Being a firefighter is no ordinary job – the work is varied, challenging and rewarding,” A/g Chief Officer Mavity said.

“We’re also encouraging those who have missed out in previous recruit rounds to reapply for our 2022 Recruit Colleges – many have become successful on their second and third attempt.

“Whether you’re ambitious, a challenge seeker, looking to help your local community or just looking for a rewarding career and lifestyle, we strongly encourage you to apply when applications open for the next intake.”

Applications for the next firefighter intake will open in July. More information on the recruitment campaign can be found at esa.act.gov.au/readywillingable.
