ACT parks celebrate World Environment Day

Released 05/06/2021

Canberrans are joining activities across the ACT’s parks to celebrate World Environment Day.

Minister for Planning and Land Management Mick Gentleman said a range of activities were highlighting how ACT parks and reserves are helping protect our environment.

“World Environment Day gives the ACT Parks and Conservation Service the opportunity to include the Canberra community in the important work we are doing to conserve and protect our environment and natural ecosystems,” Minister Gentleman said.

“This year’s theme of ‘Reimagine, Recreate, Restore’ focuses on ecosystem restoration and the ecosystem losses that are negatively impacting forests, wetlands and bogs.

“A number of community events are showcasing the work being done to restore our ecosystems, including rescue and breeding programs and threatened species recovery work.

“This includes a walk with Brush-tailed Rock-wallabies to learn what Tidbinbilla is doing to help them survive, going behind the scenes of the Corroboree Frog breeding program and a session on the challenges that wombats are facing with mange.

“We are completing ecosystem restoration projects across the ACT to prevent and reverse damage to ecosystems in our national park and nature reserves. This includes transforming old farmland into sustainable water catchment areas.

“Today I’d also like to thank the hundreds of volunteers who spend thousands of hours each year working on improving the condition of their local nature reserve across Canberra.

“While World Environment Day is certainly a special time for our parks, there’s plenty of great facilities and activities on offer every day of the year.”
