ACTSES volunteers commended for their dedicated service to Canberra community

Released 19/11/2021

Twenty-five ACT State Emergency Service (ACTSES) volunteers have been formally recognised for their commitment and long service to the Canberra community.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman said these awards came at a great time for the service, after an extensive support effort across the last 12 months.

“This year we have seen ACTSES members display their specialised skills by responding to an incredible variety of requests for assistance to keep our community safe,” Minister Gentleman said.

“I would like to express my gratitude to the ACTSES volunteers who give their time every day to help keep our community safe,” he said.

“They ask for nothing in return and deserve to be commended today, and every day, for their outstanding efforts.”

ACTSES Chief Officer Anthony Draheim congratulated the volunteers for their dedication and ongoing commitment to the service and the agency.

“Our ACTSES volunteers play an active role in keeping our community safe,” Chief Officer Draheim said.

“This year, ACTSES responded to more than 1,100 requests for assistance for leaking roofs, localised flooding, down trees and roof damage, aided in the COVID-19 response delivering essential items and information to vulnerable community members, and supported ACT Policing in 18 urban and rural search operations,” he said.

“ACTSES volunteers selflessly give their time at all hours of the day and night while often braving the harsh elements to protect our community.”

The recipients have been honoured in the following categories:

  • Meritorious Service;
  • Diligence Service
  • ACTSES Youth Achievement; sponsored by SESVA
  • Length of Service for 10 and 20 years
  • Life Member (25 years +)
