AMC incident report shows more work to be done

Released 31/03/2021

The ACT Inspector of Correctional Services’ report into a major incident at the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) has shown that while corrections staff responded well, there is more work needed to ensure they can effectively perform their roles.

Minister for Corrections Mick Gentleman referred the November 2020 incident to the Inspector to ensure an independent account of what happened and what we can learn.

“The findings around a lack of staff support, training and access to equipment are particularly concerning to me,” Minister Gentleman said.

The report contains 14 recommendations including updating policies and procedures for major critical incidents, increasing staff training and scenario exercises and conducting a full audit of the Tactical Personal Protective Equipment at the AMC and where it is stored.

“I will task Acting Commissioner Johnson with urgently reviewing the recommendations and developing an action plan for staff training and procedures when he commences next week,” Minister Gentleman said.

"I’m committed to ensuring Corrections staff are adequately trained, equipped and supported to do their jobs safely and effectively.

“The ACT Inspector of Correctional Services commended the actions of corrections officers, who de-escalated the situation without any injury to staff or detainees.

“I echo this and thank our corrections officers for the professional way they responded to the situation, and acknowledge the support provided by our first responders in ACT Policing and ACT Fire & Rescue.”
