More front-line police officers for Canberra

Released 04/06/2021

Twenty-seven new recruits have joined ACT Policing to help ensure Canberra remains a safe city.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman welcomed the new recruits at a graduation ceremony today.

“Our police do a fantastic job keeping Canberra’s crime rate low and we are supporting them in this important work,” Minister Gentleman said.

“I welcome the 27 new recruits, who will soon be deployed to stations across the ACT.

“They come from a range of backgrounds and experiences. The group includes a former postal worker, an intelligence analyst, a student pilot, a forensic archaeologist, and a marine mechanic.

“Their diversity and life experiences will stand them in good stead as they begin their community policing careers in the ACT.”

“In 2019, the ACT Government committed $33.9 million to fund 60 additional staff for ACT Policing.

“The deployment of these new recruits is delivering on our commitment to grow police numbers across Canberra.”

The 11 women and 16 men were from a larger class of 38 recruits who successfully completed the 24 week Federal Police Development Program that began in November 2020.
