Canberrans will benefit from 25 years of experience with the appointment of an ACT firefighter to the role of Chief Officer.
Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman today announced the appointment of Mr Matthew Mavity as the new Chief Officer of ACT Fire & Rescue (ACTF&R)
“After successfully leading ACTF&R over the past eight months, I am very pleased that Mr Mavity will continue in the role over the next five years,” Minister Gentleman said.
“Mr Mavity has 25 years of experience with ACTF&R as a firefighter and has moved through the ranks in specialist fire management roles within the ACT Emergency Service Agency (ACTESA),” he said.
“It is great that the next ACTF&R Chief Officer will be a local firefighter who has served and protected our community and will now lead the next generation of firefighters to do the same.”
ACTESA Commissioner Georgeina Whelan welcomed Mr Mavity to the role following an 18-month Executive Development Program, which enabled ACTF&R Superintendents an opportunity to act in the Chief Officer role to further develop the service’s leadership capability.
“Today marks a special milestone as we appoint the first ACT firefighter as Chief Officer in 13 years,” Commissioner Whelan said.
“Mr Mavity is a respected leader within ACTF&R, and I am exceptionally proud to officially welcome him into this role long-term. He has actively continued to improve the service to be highly responsive and diverse, reflecting the Canberra community,” she said.
Newly appointed Chief Officer Mavity said he was extremely proud and humbled to fulfil a vital role within ACTF&R.
“I am extremely proud of the service and am committed to upholding the reputation the leaders before me have set,” Chief Officer Mavity said.
“I look forward to furthering the implementation of the Enterprise Agreement, with emphasis on health and wellbeing and recruitment and skills maintenance,” he said.
“The community holds a great deal of trust and respect for our Fire and Rescue service, and I feel privileged to serve and protect our community in this role.”
