Minister for Corrections Mick Gentleman today welcomed 12 new correctional officers in a ceremony at the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) on Friday 24 November.

Minister Gentleman congratulated the new officers and welcomed them to ACT Corrective Services (ACTCS).

“ACTCS is an integral part of the criminal justice system and staff do an important and challenging job,” Minister Gentleman said.

“The new graduates will join the hardworking and dedicated team at the AMC to help reintegrate detainees back into the community.”

ACTCS can be a challenging environment and training includes a focus on wellbeing and workplace health and safety.

This is the second group of recruits joining the ACTCS workforce this year, bringing the total number of new correctional officers to 32 for 2023.

“It’s encouraging to see how many new recruits are joining this area of work,” Minister Gentleman said.

“Seven of the 12 new recruits are female officers and many recruits come from diverse backgrounds.”

Over the next 12 months, the recruits will continue their training to complete their Certificate III in Correctional Practice.

Quotes attributable to A/g Commissioner, ACT Corrective Services Bruno Aloisi:

“These graduates join their colleagues in helping to transform the lives of those in our care, while performing a vital role helping to keep the community safe.

“These 12 recruit graduates were selected from more than 100 applicants and they underwent a stringent selection process. Over the past 10 weeks, they have undertaken significant and diverse training to help prepare them for the challenges of working within a correctional environment each day.

“They should all feel incredibly proud of how far they have come and we welcome them and the significant contribution they will make to our community.”
