ACT Policing numbers have received a boost with 26 new recruits welcomed at a graduation ceremony at the National Arboretum.
These new constables will join nine experienced officers from other police jurisdictions who joined ACT Policing last week.
All these new officers will deploy to ACT Policing stations across the territory in the coming weeks.
The recruit class of 20 men and six women join ACT Policing with a wide range of experience, with the youngest in the class 22-years-old, while the oldest is 41.
The new officers have previously worked with corrections, Australian Border Force, all three branches of the Australian Defence Force, as well as in sectors including finance, retail, hospitality, youth work, nursing, real estate, trades, IT, and the public service.
The class, 17 of whom are from the ACT with the other nine joining from interstate, has already done some fantastic work engaging with the community they will soon serve.
During their time at the AFP College in Barton, they participated in community events including the National Multicultural Festival, the Royal Canberra Show, Australian Federal Police Commissioner’s Cup Rugby Match, and the Brad Hardy Foundation walk.
The nine experienced officers who joined ACT Policing last week have a combined 107 years of policing experience.
Under the AFP’s Skilled Police Program, these nine officers have chosen to move from other jurisdictions across Australia to ACT Policing, bringing with them a wealth of contemporary policing experience.
“I would like to extend the warmest of welcomes to all our newest ACT Policing officers,” said Minister for Police and Crime Prevention and Fire & Emergency Services, Mick Gentleman.
“The ACT Government last year unveiled an unprecedented commitment to enhance community safety by investing more than $107 million in the recruitment of 126 ACT Policing personnel over five years, the largest single investment ever made in ACT Policing.
“These officers form part of that co-hort.
“The Government will continue to monitor demand on ACT Policing as the territory grows, and we will continue to work with the AFP to ensure that we maintain a fit-for-purpose policing capability for the ACT.”
