Construction begins on Molonglo’s new emergency services station

Released 06/12/2024

Work has begun on a state-of-the-art $70 million emergency services station in the Molonglo Valley.

A sod turning and Eucalyptus cleansing ceremony today will mark the start of construction for the new ambulance and fire station strategically positioned on Cotter Road between John Gorton Drive and Steve Irwin Avenue.

Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Marisa Paterson said the new station would help the ACT Ambulance Service and ACT Fire and Rescue provide services to one of Canberra’s fastest-growing regions.

“We recognise that Molonglo Valley is growing rapidly, which is why we are strongly committed to delivering on the infrastructure to support community safety and wellbeing,” said Minister Paterson.

“This new station has been tailored in its design to meet the unique local needs of Molonglo Valley, and will ensure our first responders have the facilities they need to respond swiftly and most effectively to incidents in the area.”

Set to open in mid-2026, the station will boast features to cater to the local suburban area as well features unique to its rugged local destinations and the outdoor enthusiasts they attract. This includes a 4x4 all-terrain ambulance, which will increase the ability for paramedics to treat and transport patients from remote areas, such as Mount Stromlo.

The station is part of a broader plan to provide Canberra with modern emergency services infrastructure. The new facilities will support the operational efficiency and wellbeing of first responders, continuing to meet the needs of a growing Canberra region.

The station is expected to be operational by late 2026.

Regular updates on the project’s progress will be provided to the community, with additional information available on the Built for CBR website: www.builtforcbr.act.gov.au

Quote attributable to Wayne Phillips, Commissioner of ACT Emergency Services Agency:

“Investing in modern emergency services such as the Molonglo station ensures that we can maintain nation-leading response times while also accommodating future advancements, including the integration of more electric vehicles into our fleet.”
