ACT Fire & Rescue is partnering with Deaf Connect to raise awareness around home fire safety and encourage deaf and hard of hearing Canberrans to access specialised smoke alarm technology.
Through the hard of hearing smoke alarm program, ACT firefighters help eligible residents access specialised alarm systems that use a flashing strobe light and vibrating pad that can be placed under a pillow.
This is important as those who are deaf or have significant hearing loss may not hear a conventional smoke alarm activate, particularly while sleeping.
When smoke is detected, the strobe flashes and the pad vibrates, providing an alternative alert system for people who may not hear a traditional alarm.
Working smoke alarms are compulsory in the ACT and remain one of the most effective ways to protect lives and property. Smoke alarms provide critical early warning, allowing residents time to safely evacuate and call Triple Zero (000).

Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Dr Marisa Paterson encouraged eligible Canberrans and their families to take advantage of the program.
