Search underway for board members to run inquiry into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander deaths in custody

Released 02/04/2026

The ACT Government is seeking expressions of interest for members for the Board of Inquiry into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander deaths in custody in the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC).

The board will inquire into systemic issues relevant to the deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the AMC and will be guided by advice from the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community on conducting a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive inquiry, including input provided by the Community Advisory Committee.

Expressions of interest close on 8 May 2026.

Minister for Corrections, Dr Marisa Paterson, encourages people from all background to submit an expression of interest.

“The EOI outlines the desirable skills and experiences we are looking for, but also acknowledges that it is not a requirement for applicants to demonstrate all the criteria.

“The broad mix of skills necessary to effectively run the Board of Inquiry means we are open to appointing part-time or full-time members.

“A strong understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander justice issues, along with a demonstrated commitment to delivering a culturally safe, community-focused inquiry, will be essential. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.”
