ACT to align with NSW on Anzac Day public holidays

Released 24/03/2026 - Joint media release

The ACT Government will align with New South Wales by declaring both Saturday 25 April 2026 and Monday 27 April 2026 as public holidays for Anzac Day in 2026.

The Government has decided to align the ACT’s public holiday arrangements with NSW, recognising strong cross‑border workforce and family connections and reducing confusion for workers and employers.

Anzac Day will continue to be commemorated on 25 April, with all dawn services and commemorative activities taking place on the Saturday. Monday will be an additional public holiday.

Further information on ACT public holidays will be available on the ACT Government website.

Quotes attributed to ACT Chief Minister, Andrew Barr:

“Anzac Day is one of the most important days in our national calendar, and it will always be commemorated on 25 April.”

“The ACT is uniquely positioned within NSW, with many families living on one side of the border and working or studying on the other. Declaring both Saturday and Monday as public holidays respects the significance of the day and provides clarity for the community.”

“This decision provides clear, straightforward arrangements and removes unnecessary confusion across our borders with NSW.”

Quotes attributed to Minister for Industrial Relations and Workplace Safety Michael Pettersson:

“This decision reflects the realities of our shared regional workforce and the feedback we’ve received from stakeholders.”

“Aligning the Anzac public holiday arrangements with NSW provides greater certainty for businesses and workers as they plan operations and time with family.”

“The additional public holiday gives people time beyond the day itself to pause, reflect and spend time with loved ones, while keeping Anzac Day firmly at the heart of remembrance.”
