The seven members of the fifth ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body have been officially declared by Elections ACT.

Tanya Michelle Keed, Lynnice Church, Maurice Walker, Margaret Blackman, Jo Chivers, Leah House and Paula McGrady have been chosen by their community as members of the Elected Body for the next three years.

Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs Rachel Stephen-Smith welcomed the new members.

“The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body plays a vital role in the ACT, representing the interests and aspirations of Canberra’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. The community has elected a mix of new and returning members, and I am looking forward to working with them to continue the Elected Body’s great work to ensure we are delivering effective policies that make a real difference to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Canberrans.

“I am confident the new Elected Body will continue the strong legacy of past members, holding the ACT Government to account and providing a strong voice for the community,” said Minister Stephen-Smith.

The ACT Elected Body is crucial in advocating for accountability and effectiveness in government policies and services, including through the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Agreement 2019-2028 and in its role with the Coalition of Peak Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Organisations and the Joint Council on Closing the Gap.
