Full speed ahead for the Canberra Hospital Expansion

Released 29/06/2021

The ACT Government and Multiplex today signed the main design and construction contract to deliver the Canberra Hospital Expansion.

Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith welcomed the contract signing and said it was a significant milestone for all Canberrans.

“Securing the future health and wellbeing of the Canberra community means we need to invest in health infrastructure where Canberrans need it most.

“The Canberra Hospital Expansion will ensure Canberrans have access to a world class tertiary hospital as our population grows.

“The increased capacity, state of the art clinical facilities and welcoming spaces delivered through this project will help to transform emergency and critical healthcare for Canberrans and people from the surrounding region,” said Minister Stephen-Smith.

Multiplex initially partnered with the ACT Government in August 2020 to progress the new facility’s design to the development application stage, in consultation with user groups and the wider community.

The contract signing today marks the continuation of that partnership and the next step towards building the new Emergency, Surgical and Critical Healthcare building.

“Over the coming months, the ACT Government and Multiplex will continue to consult with hospital staff, consumers and the local community as we continue the detailed design process and commence construction of the new building.

“This project will create an additional 500 construction jobs in the ACT and the Multiplex team shares the Government’s commitment to providing employment and upskilling opportunities for Canberrans. The first group of local trainees and apprentices has already begun the pre-screening process,” said Minister Stephen-Smith.

Major Projects Canberra’s Chief Projects Officer Duncan Edghill said the ACT Government is very pleased to be continuing its partnership with Multiplex.

“Multiplex has worked constructively with the ACT Government during the early design phase of the project. The work already completed shows the Canberra community can expect the project to deliver a substantial, modern, world-class facility which will meet the health needs of Canberrans for many decades to come.

“We look forward to our continued collaboration with Multiplex as we move into the construction phase of the project,” said Mr Edghill.

Multiplex Regional Managing Director David Ghannoum also welcomed the continued partnership.

“We are really pleased to be chosen to deliver this critical infrastructure for the benefit of the Canberra community and look forward to our continued involvement in creating long lasting employment and social benefit for Canberra,” said Mr Ghannoum.

The Canberra Hospital Expansion Project has already begun to transform the Canberra Hospital campus with nine associated projects delivered to date. These include a new administration building, refurbishments to buildings across the campus and the new Building 8 which houses the Sexual Health Centre, Surgical Training Centre and staff development rooms.

The project has also seen the completion of a temporary car park on the former CIT site, providing more than 1100 additional parking spaces.

The completion of these projects marks the end of the enabling works program, and preparation for the main works has now commenced with internal demolition of buildings 5 and 24 currently underway.
